How to create conscious and purposeful compositions that communicate in any media.
Picture making is a lost art and its’ value is scarcely understood today. This class is designed to give the artist greater content and personal meaning to their work. It is about communication beyond just the image content and media format. I will give a method to arrive at concrete discernment, clear perceptions and critical thinking which hopefully leads the artist to make informed decisions about their approach to understanding and making World Class Art.
This session is mostly a demo, lecture and open forum format combined with independent study and intensive group dialoging about our results. Starting with basics up through extremely advanced pictorial design, we explore multiple strategies clearly communicating ideas of any defined content.
Step one is analyzing pictures, deconstructing them, and familiarizing ourselves with the ideas, intentions and functions of each design and composition. Transcending the essential sketch, we’ll explore high level planning and improvisational approaches. This includes traditional, narrative and abstract solutions to all subjects and genres.
Examples of the topics covered will be:
How we see and its implications
Picture development: The Main Idea/The Pattern/Dominant Shape/Focal Points
Fundamental design issues: line, shape, color, values, order, dynamics, rhythm, balance, unity, silhouettes, counterchange, linkage, vignettes, eye movement and control, hierarchical areas and patterns, decorative patterning, readability, underlying structures, tonal plans, linear description
The essential and the significant
Planning and improvisation
Conscious intent and intuition
The picture border and beyond
Thinking graphically: Thumbnails, Comps, Layouts, Master Drawings, Block-Ins and Finishing
Diagnosing problems
Students will be making a notebook of design principles, procedures and class notes. This is years of complied information not readily available anywhere.
Teacher not responsible for student missed class! Each week builds on the previous.
